Viewing DLMF Interactive 3D Graphics

In the DLMF, we provide facilities for the interactive display of special functions of two independent variables. To do this we use VRML (Virtual Reality Modeling Language), a standard file format for describing the behavior and geometry of a 3D virtual scene on the web. With a VRML browser/plugin installed inside your web browser, you will be able to render the scene and interactively rotate, scale and otherwise explore the 3D surface.

The VRML Plugin and Browser Detector will list the VRML browsers available for your machine and detect any browser already installed. Below we provide some notes to supplement the download instructions for two VRML browsers available for Windows systems Disclaimer. (Note: If you already have a VRML browser, it should be uninstalled before installing a new one.)

VRML Browsers for Windows

Cortona VRML Client

Cortona VRML Client was developed by ParallelGraphics Company To download, go to Cortona Downloads and click on “Install Cortona VRML Client …” There are two options for installing the software: automatic and manual. The automatic option (“Install Now!”) can only be used to install Cortona under a single web browser: Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, depending on the browser used to access the download page. To install Cortona under more than one browser, or install it inside other web browsers such as Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, and Opera, the user must select the ftp or http links under “Manual Setup” and follow the instructions and installation tips.

BS Contact VRML/X3D

BS Contact VRML/X3D was developed by Bitmanagement Software GmbH. It can be used to view not only VRML files, but also files in the emerging XML based format, X3D. To download a free test version of the browser, go to Downloads The test version has no functional limitations, but features the company logo which moves randomly over the screen. The logo can be removed only by paying a license fee. Also, if the user selects version 6.1 and chooses automated installation (Internet Explorer only), the logo remains in a corner at the bottom of the screen.

VRML Browsers for Other Platforms

We are still assessing which browsers for platforms other than Windows are sufficiently capable for viewing the DLMF's VRML files.
